36 years ago, on November 5, 1991, Thalapathy, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, directed by Mani Ratnam and produced by G. V. Films, was released. It would not be an exaggeration to call this film a trendsetter, not just in the history of Tamil cinema but in the history of Indian cinema itself. Released amid enormous expectations, the film earned the distinction of being a regional-language film that challenged the commercial dominance of Hindi cinema, which was widely regarded as the powerhouse of the Indian film industry.

From the 1930s onwards, Hindi cinema dominated the Indian film landscape across the country. Although films in other regional languages were released within their respective states, Hindi films enjoyed wider releases across India. Hindi cinema also dominated in terms of production budgets and large-scale productions. Its influence extended to international markets as well. Against this backdrop, for a film from a regional language industry, representing a state with less than 10 per cent of India’s population, to challenge the established history of Indian cinema was nothing short of a revolution. There can be little disagreement that Thalapathy created a historic wave in Indian cinema.

Those were the years when the charisma and screen presence of one man, Rajinikanth, dominated the entire Tamil film industry. During this period, Rajinikanth was delivering consecutive successes. His film Rajadhi Raja had reportedly created history by surpassing the box-office collections of the Hindi blockbuster Sholay at the national level. This achievement also contributed to Rajinikanth earning the distinction of becoming the first actor in India to receive a remuneration of ₹1 crore.

With Thalapathy, Rajinikanth further strengthened his position as the first actor in India to command a remuneration of ₹1 crore. Thalapathy also became a landmark regional-language film that challenged the commercial boundaries of Indian cinema. Merchandise carrying the name Thalapathy, from T-shirts to key chains and various other products, sold in huge numbers. The film achieved remarkable success in audio cassette sales across India and also wrote a new chapter in cinema history through midnight screenings.

Even today, the release strategies and business potential of Indian films in the global cinema market continue to be widely discussed. The beginning of this new commercial conversation can be traced back to a regional-language film called Thalapathy. The list of historical milestones initiated by this film is so long that it could go on and on. Without a doubt, Thalapathy remains one of the landmark films that opened new chapters in the history of Indian cinema!
