A Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), commonly known as a mini-stroke, occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is temporarily interrupted. Although the symptoms may disappear within minutes or hours, it is a serious medical warning that should never be ignored.
Common warning signs include sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the face, arm or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, sudden vision problems, dizziness, and loss of balance or coordination.
One of the most dangerous misconceptions about TIA is that there is nothing to worry about once the symptoms disappear. This is not true. A TIA can be an important warning sign of a potentially serious stroke in the near future. Recognising the symptoms early and seeking immediate medical attention can make a significant difference.
Never wait for the symptoms to return. Even if the symptoms disappear completely, seek emergency medical care immediately. Urgent medical assessment is essential to identify the cause, assess the risk of a major stroke and begin appropriate treatment.
Stroke awareness can save lives. Learn the warning signs, educate your family and friends, and act without delay when symptoms appear. Remember, every minute matters when it comes to brain health.
BE STROKE AWARE. ACT FAST. SAVE LIVES.
