Following the April 2026 Assembly elections, actor Vijay has been running a government without a clear majority. Meanwhile, smaller parties that had won the election as part of an alliance with the DMK have joined hands with Vijay and are now travelling alongside him in the government and political alliance. Narratives have continuously been created suggesting that the DMK has been left isolated, that its political journey is over, and that it won the election only because of its alliance partners. However, within just a couple of weeks of missing out on victory, a massive wave of young people spontaneously emerged across Tamil Nadu under the banner of Gen Z Meet, drawing the attention of the entire national political landscape.

From Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem and Thanjavur, Gen Z youngsters have been organising a series of public meetings and discussions. Their message has been clear: the Dravidian movement cannot be defeated so easily. The DMK is not a party that has grown or survived merely on individual charisma or caste and religious structures, like many other political parties. To put it in the words of Kalaignar, it is a great social movement. The spontaneous gathering of these young people has demonstrated the strength of the ideological foundation of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

At a time when the party leadership had decided to restructure the party organisation, with reorganisation efforts continuing on one side, this youth force has independently taken to social media, engaging in ideological debates and raising challenging questions. Their emergence has raised a significant question at the national level: Can an ideology-driven movement like the DMK survive and remain relevant across successive generations?

Unlike the supporters of many other movements and political parties, who often resort to mere counter-allegations and verbal exchanges, these youngsters are putting forward ideology-based responses and sharp counter-questions like political missiles. This is something that Tamil Nadu’s political arena, and perhaps even Indian politics, has rarely witnessed. The responsibility of guiding these ideologically committed young people who have an affinity towards the DMK rests with the party’s Youth Wing Secretary, Udhayanidhi Stalin. He, too, appears to have taken this responsibility seriously and is guiding this emerging youth force.

The questions raised and debates initiated by these youngsters are creating anxiety and a sense of fear among the functionaries of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). This is a psychological reality. More importantly, the counter-arguments and questions raised by these youngsters on social media are said to be powerful enough to keep even actor Vijay, the leader of the party, politically uncomfortable and awake.

It may be possible to manage this youth force as long as the party enjoys the advantages of being in power. However, if the TVK government collapses, or during the next Assembly election, particularly if the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held simultaneously in 2029 under the proposed One Nation, One Election system, this growing youth force may become extremely difficult to counter. That is the political reality.

Reports from Vijay’s circles strongly indicate that Udhayanidhi’s youth brigade has become a source of serious political concern for him.
