A captivating artistic performance bringing together Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music took centre stage on the second day of Provoke Art Festival 2026, held on November 1 at the T.T.K. Auditorium of the Music Academy in Chennai. The programme offered art lovers an opportunity to experience the beauty of India’s classical traditions and the intricate relationship between music and dance on a single stage.
Bharatanatyam is much more than a sequence of dance movements. It is one of India’s most distinguished classical dance forms, expressing emotions, stories and philosophical ideas through facial expressions, eye movements, hand gestures (mudras), footwork, rhythm and body language. The combination of Abhinaya, Adavus, Jathis and the expressive portrayal of the Navarasas brings extraordinary depth and beauty to the performance.

One of the major highlights of the festival was the Jugalbandi presented by Bharatanatyam dancer Jayanthi Subramaniam and Carnatic vocalist Sikkil C. Gurucharan. The coming together of expressive dance movements with the ragas, rhythms and musical nuances of Carnatic music created a distinctive artistic experience, highlighting the close relationship between these two classical art forms.
Music gives life to every movement in Bharatanatyam, while dance translates the subtle nuances of music into visual expressions through Abhinaya and body language. When these two art forms come together, they create an aesthetic experience that reflects the richness of India’s cultural heritage. The festival also featured a folk arts performance by the Urappanar troupe, adding another dimension to the programme. The inclusion of folk traditions alongside classical Bharatanatyam highlighted the diversity of India’s artistic heritage.
Preserving traditional art forms and introducing them to younger generations is essential in the modern era. Bharatanatyam, Carnatic music and folk arts are not merely forms of entertainment; they represent India’s history, culture, language and way of life. The artistic confluence presented at Provoke Art Festival 2026 served as a reminder of Chennai’s vibrant cultural identity and the enduring significance of India’s classical and traditional performing arts.
