According to an official announcement released by the Government of Oman, the holy month of Ramadan will commence on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Authorities confirmed that the crescent moon (Hilal) was not expected to be sighted on Wednesday evening, leading to the decision that Ramadan will officially begin the following day. Muslims across Oman will therefore begin fasting from February 19.
As per the Islamic calendar, the beginning of each month is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. On Wednesday evening, corresponding to the 29th day of Sha’ban, moon-sighting committees stationed across various regions of the country conducted observations based on astronomical calculations and weather assessments. Since the crescent moon was not sighted, the month of Sha’ban will complete 30 days, and Thursday has been declared the first day of Ramadan.

Ramadan holds immense spiritual, moral, and social significance for Muslims. From dawn until sunset, believers observe fasting by refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs. The month is also marked by increased devotion, including the five daily prayers, special Taraweeh prayers, recitation of the Holy Qur’an, charity (Zakat), and various acts of kindness. It is regarded as a time that emphasizes self-discipline, patience, compassion, and spiritual reflection.
In preparation for Ramadan, mosques across Oman are making arrangements for special prayers and religious gatherings. Community organizations and charitable institutions have also announced initiatives to provide Iftar meals for the underprivileged. The government has taken necessary steps to ensure that the public can observe the holy month in a peaceful and spiritually uplifting environment.
