In Sydney, doctors are using one of the most advanced cancer treatments available today — MRI-guided cryoablation, a technique that can destroy tumors without traditional surgery. The procedure uses real-time MRI imaging to guide a thin probe directly into the tumor, allowing doctors to precisely target cancerous tissue.
Once the probe is in place, the tumor is frozen from the inside out. The device can lower the temperature to around –40°C or even colder, causing the cancer cells to rupture and die. Because the process is highly controlled and localized, it destroys the tumor while leaving surrounding healthy tissue largely unaffected. There are no large incisions, stitches, or long recovery periods.

For patients who are too weak for surgery, elderly individuals, or those with tumors in difficult or high-risk locations, this method offers a valuable alternative. Many patients are able to come in for the procedure, remain awake while it is performed under MRI guidance, and return home the very same day.
Medical experts say innovations like MRI-guided cryoablation show that the future of cancer treatment may not rely on bigger surgeries, but on smarter, more precise technologies that minimize pain, risk, and recovery time.
